The Ministry of Public Enterprises has been established by the proclamation to provide for the definition of powers and duties of executive organs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (proclamation no.916/2015). The Ministry is entrusted with the task of, among others, ensuring that public enterprises have developed strategic and annual plan consistent with policies, strategies and economic goals of the government, and approving such plans and monitoring their implementation. It also oversees their corporate governance and financial management. The Minister is W/ro Demitu Hambissa, who has set out to transform SOE’s of Ethiopia with strategic vision and strong commitment.
The Ministry of Public Enterprises has been structured in four sectors to execute its duties. The first is Manufacturing Industries & Agriculture Sector which is headed by State Minister Ato Beyene G/Meskel, former Director General of Privatization and Public Enterprises Supervising Agency who played a leading role in the supervision and privatization of public enterprises. The second is Transport and Communications Sector which is headed by none other than State Minister Ato Getachew Mengiste, a well-known technocrat and also famous for his meritorious leadership style who was also a long time state minister for Transport and Communications. The third, Mineral, Energy, Natural Gas & Construction Sector is headed by State Minister Ato Tolosa Gedefa, a well-known leader and professional and former Deputy Director of Sugar Corporation. The fourth sector Corporate Finance Administration is headed by State Minister W/ro Meselech Wodajo, an able and energetic leader who is also a long serving parliamentarian.

H.E W/ro Demitu Hambisa, conferred with senior delegation of General Electric
H.E W/ro Demitu Hambisa,Minister of Public Enterprises, conferred with senior delegation of General Electric which was led by tis vice chairman Mr. John Rice on May 11/2016 in her office. The Minister explained to Mr. Rice and his delegates the Ministry’s mission and the objectives of its establishment. The Minister ascertained the importance of engaging in joint venture activities in priority areas which are vital for the development of the economy.
The Minister also invited the delegation to participate in the privatization programme with alternative modalities which is highly beneficial to technology transfer.
Global Vice Chairman of General Electric and the head of the delegation Mister John Rice on his part said that his company has had long standing working relationships with the Ethiopian government and therefore it won’t be difficult to work with the newly established Ministry of Public Enterprises. Based on the briefings he received, Mr. Rice also asserted that there are common fields of which his company can engage in with the Ministry and with those corporations and enterprises under its supervision especially in the areas of capacity building trainings, information technology and similar fields.
H.E W/ro Demitu Hambisa also reiterated the importance of capacity building trainingsand experience sharing engagements with General Electric for the newly established Ministry of Public Enterprises.
Sille Agricultural Development Enterprise has been privatized
The Ministry of Public Enterprises, in accordance with the powers and duties bestowed on it by Proclamation no. 916/2005, has privatized Sille Agricultural Development Enterprise at a price of 59,757,623.00 Birr (Fifty nine million seven hundred fifty seven and six hundred twenty three Birr) to Lucy Agricultural Development S.C which was previously managing the Agricultural Enterprise on a lease basis.
